How to Reduce Embroidery Machine Downtime in Your Shift

Embroidery factories running multi-head multi-needle machines often face significant losses due to machine downtime. Stoppage costs are hidden under shift records, resulting in poor machinery utilization.

Here are the primary causes of machine downtime and how you can fix them using data logs.

1. High Thread Breakage (TB Time)

One of the most frequent stoppage reasons is thread breakages. When a thread breaks:

  • The specific machine head stops.
  • The operator must manually re-thread the needle.
  • This creates cumulative delays when multiplied across a 12-hour shift.

The Fix: Clean tension settings regularly. Using logging software like Embros ERP, you can track the average `tb_time` per shift. If a specific machine has a higher thread-break average, it indicates bad thread quality or faulty needle alignment.

2. Unscheduled Stopped Hours (Stop Time)

A machine sitting idle between design uploads or patch swaps wastes valuable stitch capacity.

  • Waiting for the supervisor to approve layout designs.
  • Delayed needle changes or fabric replacement.

The Fix: Keep layouts pre-approved. Set a policy where the design pattern numbers (`design_no`) are pre-queued on the control deck before the current stitch batch finishes.

3. Operator Performance Comparison

Not all operators run machines at the same efficiency. Some take longer to handle thread breaks or load garments.
